    Frequently Asked Questions

Every room is different. So is every project.

The Smoking Room Co. designs purpose-built spaces around the way they need to look, feel, and perform. Here are a few of the questions that often matter at the beginning of that process.

    1. Can an existing room be converted into a smoking room?

Yes. Many smoking rooms begin as existing spaces.

We evaluate the room as a complete system — including its size and layout, existing HVAC, available exhaust routes, makeup air, adjacent spaces, exterior-wall access, and how the room will actually be used.

The goal isn't simply to add equipment. It's to develop a strategy that allows the room to function properly within the home or building around it.

    2. Do you work with new construction as well as existing homes?

      Yes.

In new construction, involving The Smoking Room Co. early gives us the opportunity to address ventilation, makeup air, HVAC, electrical requirements, room layout, materials, lighting, and other considerations before the room is built.

Existing rooms can also be transformed successfully, but the design must work within the conditions already present.

    3. What makes a properly designed smoking room different from simply adding an exhaust fan?

An exhaust fan is only one part of the system.

A successful smoking room requires intentional control of how air enters the room, moves through the space, and leaves it. Exhaust, makeup air, pressure relationships, temperature and humidity control, filtration, room geometry, materials, and the way the room is operated all affect the final result.

The Smoking Room Co. approaches the room as a complete environment rather than a collection of individual products.

    4. Do you handle construction and installation?

The Smoking Room Co. is a design and consulting service.

We develop the room strategy, design direction, performance requirements, equipment recommendations, and specifications appropriate to the scope of the project.

Construction, electrical, HVAC, structural, and other licensed trade work is performed by contractors and professionals selected by the client. On more complex projects, we work alongside those professionals to help ensure the finished room performs as intended.

    5. Can you work with my builder, architect, HVAC contractor, or interior designer?

      Absolutely.

Some of the best projects are collaborative. The Smoking Room Co. can work with your existing project team to communicate the intended performance of the room and help coordinate the different systems that affect it.

Our role is not to replace those professionals. It is to understand the smoking room as a whole and help ensure the individual disciplines are working toward the same result.

    6. Do you only design cigar rooms?

      No.

Private smoking rooms and cigar lounges are a specialty of The Smoking Room Co., but we also design podcast studios and other purpose-built hospitality and specialty spaces where atmosphere, comfort, acoustics, airflow, lighting, and function need to work together.

    7. Do you work outside Upstate South Carolina?

      Yes.

The Smoking Room Co. is based in Upstate South Carolina, but projects are not limited to the region.

Depending on the project, portions of the consultation, plan review, design, and coordination process can be completed remotely. For projects requiring an on-site assessment or continued in-person involvement, travel can be incorporated into the project scope.

    8. How much does a project cost?

      Every project is different.

Room size, existing conditions, mechanical complexity, level of design involvement, and whether the project is new construction or a retrofit can all affect the scope.

Rather than forcing every room into the same package, we begin by understanding the space, the intended use, and what you want the finished room to accomplish.

    9. Where does the process begin?

      With a conversation.

Tell us about the room, how you intend to use it, what isn't working now — if anything — and what you want the finished space to become.

From there, we can determine the appropriate scope and next steps for your project.

Ready to talk about your room?

Every great room starts with understanding what it needs to do.
